Reading Tutoring Activities That Work
Hello.
Last time I shared information on reading, I gave an overview of what an intervention may look liked in Blog #2, Let’s Talk About Reading. Today, I want to focus on the students who know their letter names and sounds and are working on words that have blends and digraphs, such as think, blank, truck.
In the picture below, the word ending -ank is on one card and the ending -ink is on another. There are also cards with either an l-blend, an r-blend, a digraph or just a consonant for the beginning sound or letters. Students will place a card with a beginning blend, digraph or consonant in front of each card with the ending chunk. They will then segment, decode, blend and read the words and continue to do this until they have discovered all possible words. For an extra layer of learning, students can write down each real word they make in a journal or on a piece of paper.

There is the possibility that students will make fake words in this activity, but it will still give them the opportunity to segment, decode, blend and read the fake words.

Variations of this activity include saying a word for students and having them use the letter cards to build the word. For example, if I say the word “blank,” students need to hear the /l/ (l sound) in order to choose the correct beginning letters. This variation requires students to use their phonological awareness skills to choose the correct beginning card.

This activity is a great way for students to practice their reading skills. It can also be a great way to challenge them and informally check their understanding.
