Let’s talk about math

Math supports and interventions need to start with what the student knows and understands. It’s not just about teaching the procedures to solve problems. Students need to develop an understanding of why and how a procedure works. They need to understand number sense.

In this video I demonstrate how I would work with a student who is just learning or struggling with multi-digit multiplication that is introduced in fourth grade. I start by looking at their errors. Are they making the same error or are the making different types of errors? This helps me determine what skills from third grade I need to review and bring forward to help them learn this new skill.
