Reading Comprehension Game: Scrambled Sentences

Hello.

Today, I want to share another game that you can adapt for basic reading skills, math, and reading comprehension.  I am going to focus on reading comprehension and grammar.

I start with a book my class is familiar with, Stone Soup by Jon J Muth and some 3x5 cards.  On the cards I write the words for a sentence that is either from the text of the story, or it is a summary statement about the story.  Students will need something to write on.  A wipe board or paper will work.

Tutoring strategy -- Reading comprehension game of Scrambled Sentences

Scrambled Sentences is a great way to review a book or chapter that students have read. It’s also a great way to review basic writing mechanics.

Students, or teams of students, will take turns taking a card from the deck.  They can either take the top card, or the cards can be spread out for students to pick randomly from the deck.  Once they pull a card, the students will need to figure out how to order the words that are on the card into a sentence.  They cannot add words or leave words out.  Every word on the card must be used.  Also, students cannot change the tense or plurality of any word, and the final sentence must include proper capitalization and punctuation. Students, or teams, can collect the cards they successfully unscramble.

If your students need supports you can allow them to use the book, write the page number on the card where students can find the sentence in the book, pair students appropriately into teams, and even simplify the sentences and sentence structure on the cards.  With that said, you can also challenge students by giving them sentences with more complex sentence structure.

This is a fun and engaging game that allows students to interact and manipulate a text to help them gain a deeper understanding of it.
